ADDED 05-27-2007
Obesity among men has risen among adults throughout the past 20 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Studies have shown that 30 percent of adults who are least 20 years of age are obese, with a body mass index of 30 or higher. What this means is that at least 60 million people are obese. Ironically, although a national goal is to decrease the amount of obese adults, the health of the nation is getting increasingly worse.

There are a variety of complications which tend to be associated with obesity. Some of these include endocrine abnormalities, cardiovascular disease, degenerative arthritis, respiratory and pulmonary ailments, hypertension, gallbladder disease, and some forms of cancer.

Another one of the common complications which is associated with obesity is psychological issues, such as low self esteem. This tends to be caused by low body image and failures with diets. Majority of the time, for most people who are obese, failure to lose weight through diets is very common. The chances of losing a significant amount of weight through dieting is extremely low. Obese individuals who have tried numerous times to lose weight through dieting and exercising may find that biatric weight loss treatment will work effectively for them.

There are two different types of biatric weight loss surgery treatments. These procedures include restriction and malabsorption. The restriction procedure works by reducing the size of the stomach through either gastric bands, staples or both used in combination with one another. The malabsorption procedure works by reducing the size of the stomach and bypass duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine, or the whole jejunum- which is the midsection of the intestine.
