In America, weight loss surgeries are performed by doctors more than 140,000 times a year. It is one of the most hopeful options for those who are severely overweight.
One of the oldest types of weight loss surgeries is stomach stapling, in which most of the stomach is sliced and stapled shut. Once this operation has taken place, the amount of food which the stomach can hold is a half of cup. This makes a person feel fuller faster. Most people tend to find that they feel full after eating an amount of food that could be placed on a coffee saucer. With this type of procedure, it is impossible to any more than 50 grams of food- which is the equivalent of two quarter cup servings.
Another weight loss surgery option, in which the stomach is not sliced and stapled shut, is Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Through this form of weight loss surgery, the stomach is cut and sewn. The intestines are also rearranged so that the stomach is connected farther down the intestine. This form of weight loss surgery works by creating a smaller stomach will feels full easier, as well as shortening the length of the intestine so that fats can be absorbed through smaller amounts of food. Not only will you eat less with this surgery option, but your intestines will absorb a smaller amount of food that you eat. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass tends to provide much more effective results than stomach stapling.
Both stomach stapling and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery will require patients to remain in the hospital for at least four days. You cannot have an active lifestyle with these types of surgery until six to eight weeks later.
The third weight loss surgery option is the lap band. There are a number of different benefits that are associated with lap band surgery. The main benefit that is associated with this type of surgery is the fact that it can be done through a one inch incision. It can even be done as an outpatient procedure, in which the patient will go home the same day. Most people can get back to their normal lifestyles, aside from eating, within one week.
There is a lower chance of getting an infection with lap band surgery. Since lap band surgery goes around the stomach rather than inside it, the bacteria that is in the stomach will not leak into other body parts. In comparison to all of the other types of weight loss surgery options, lap band tends to be the least painful. While there are often problems associated with the other types of weight loss surgeries due to pain, this is not the case with lap band surgery.
The major disadvantage that is associated with lap band surgery is the fact that not everyone is an ideal candidate. You also need to make sure that you are not allergic to any of the materials used to make the band. The other disadvantage of lap band surgery is the fact that it requires much more discipline than the other two weight loss surgery methods. If you overeat with a lap band, it can be stretched which may cause damage to the stomach.
Of course, there is no type of weight loss surgery that is a total cure for obesity. Even after you have went through a weight loss surgery procedure, it is important to pay attention to both your diet and exercise throughout your entire life in order to maintain a healthy weight. |
